Crypto recovery after a crash: what the rebounds looked like
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Crypto recovery after a crash took 4 shapes: a slow base after 2018, a fast rebound in 2020 and 2021, and an ETF-led climb after 2022.
- From $5,000 on 16 March 2020 to $64,800 on 14 April 2021, Bitcoin rose about 13 times.
- From $16,216 on 28 November 2022, it reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024 and $100,000 on 5 December 2024.
- FTX estimated recoveries of 118% to 142% of claim values at the petition date.
- A rebound repairs price faster than it repairs trust.
Crypto recovery after a crash took 4 shapes in the record: a slow base after 2018, a fast rebound after March 2020, a quick resumption in 2021 and an ETF-led climb after 2022. This page compares them by size and driver, as of October 2026, and shows what a rebound repairs and what it leaves open. It is one chapter of the biggest crypto crashes.

What did crypto recovery look like after each major crash?
Rebound size can be read from the quoted lows and highs. From a low near $3,100 in December 2018 to $64,800 on 14 April 2021, Bitcoin rose about 21 times. From $5,000 on 16 March 2020 to the same April peak, it rose about 13 times. From $30,000 on 19 May 2021 to $67,566.83 on 7 November 2021, it rose about 2.3 times.
From $16,216 on 28 November 2022 to $73,664 on 13 March 2024, it rose about 4.5 times, and by $100,000 on 5 December 2024 about 6 times. These multiples come from simple division of the dated prices quoted above. They show that deeper lows produced larger rebounds, though a large multiple says little about when it arrives.
Why was crypto recovery after the 2018 crash so slow?
After 2018 the market rebuilt in small steps. Bitcoin’s total value had fallen below $100 billion in November 2018, and the price stayed under $20,000 until December 2020. A bubble that deflates removes the buyers who drove it, and replacing them takes time. The rebuild ran for about 2 years before the next large rise.
A slow base has one advantage: it clears the weakest projects and the most fragile positions. It also tests patience, because a holder sees little progress for many months. Anyone who studies this period learns that a recovery after a bubble starts quietly, with low volume and little attention, and that it rewards those who held a plan.
How did policy support shape crypto recovery after March 2020?
The Federal Reserve cut its target rate to 0% to 0.25% on 16 March 2020, the same day Bitcoin fell to $5,000. It announced a $700 billion quantitative easing program that day and $450 billion in swap lines on 19 March. Bitcoin passed $20,000 in December 2020, about 9 months after the low.
The timing shows how outside policy can shape a recovery that began as an outside shock. A liquidity crash ends when liquidity returns, and in 2020 the central bank supplied it within days. Readers who follow policy announcements gain context for a rebound, though policy support does not guarantee one in every future episode.
Why did crypto recovery after the May 2021 crash arrive so fast?
The May 2021 fall ended at $30,000 on 19 May, and Bitcoin set $67,566.83 on 7 November 2021, about 6 months later. Ethereum peaked at $4,812.09 on the same date. The fall had come from news about Tesla and Chinese rules, and leverage amplified it, not from a failed company.
No large balance sheet needed repair, so the market could resume. A recovery moves quickly when the cause of the fall is news and leverage and no major firm has failed. The contrast with 2022 is sharp: the same asset peaked in 2021, and then the failures of that year took more than a year to work through.
How did ETF approval change crypto recovery after 2022?
In January 2024 the US SEC approved the listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products. Bitcoin reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024 as US bitcoin ETFs saw record inflows, and it reached $100,000 on 5 December 2024. This recovery had a new driver: a regulated product that investors could buy through ordinary accounts.
A driver of this kind changes who buys. The buyer base widened from crypto users to investors who use brokerage accounts, and flows into the ETFs became a data point to follow. FTI Consulting notes that ETFs saw significant outflows after the October 2025 liquidation, which shows that the same channel works in both directions.
What does crypto recovery leave unrepaired after a crash?
A price recovery leaves legal and trust questions open. The FTX estimate in 2023 said customers and digital asset loan creditors would recover between 118% and 142% of their petition date claim values, an estimate by the chief executive overseeing the case. The Mt. Gox plan won acceptance from 99% of creditors in October 2021, more than 7 years after the halt.
Those figures show that repair follows a legal calendar, not a price chart. A holder who lost access to funds during a failure waited for years, whatever Bitcoin did in the meantime. The lesson for a treasury is plain: separate the price of an asset from the safety of the venue that holds it.
How can you read a crypto recovery without chasing it?
Four questions help. What caused the fall, and has that cause ended? Who is buying now, and who is selling? How much borrowed money sits behind the move? Which venues hold the assets, and what proof of reserves exists? A rebound that answers all 4 well stands on firmer ground than one driven by momentum alone.
The EQOS Asia method page shows how these questions become a score, and a 30-minute pre-diagnostic applies them to your exposure. This page is general information, not investment advice, and it does not rank the recovery after October 2025, since the sources checked give no dated rebound price for it.

Frequently asked questions
How long does crypto recovery take after a crash?
In the record, Bitcoin took about 6 months after the May 2021 low and about 24 months after the 2018 low to reach a new high. After the 2022 low it took about 16 months to reach $73,664. The cause of the fall sets the pace.
What was the biggest crypto rebound?
Measured from the quoted lows, the rebound from the 2018 low near $3,100 to $64,800 in April 2021 was about 21 times, the largest. It also took the longest. Deeper lows produced larger multiples, though they say little about timing.
Did ETFs speed up crypto recovery?
After the 2022 low, Bitcoin reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024 as US bitcoin ETFs saw record inflows, following the SEC approval of January 2024. The same channel saw significant outflows after October 2025, so it works in both directions.
Is a price rebound the end of a crypto crash?
A rebound ends the price story only. Legal and trust questions run on a separate calendar, as the FTX and Mt. Gox processes show. As of October 2026 a careful reader tracks both. This page is general information, not investment advice.
