Investor readiness checklist: scoring the fundraising decision
The essentials in 30 seconds
- An investor readiness checklist rates 6 items as ready, partly ready, or open.
- A go rule sets the moment to contact investors, for example 10 points of 12 and no open item.
- In the illustrative example, the company scores 8 of 12 and closes the open cap table item first.
- EQOS Asia scores fundraising readiness on 9 dimensions, with 0.618 as the line between STOP and OK (EQOS Asia method page, as of October 2026).
- The Strategic Diagnostic at US$4,586 covers fundraising and capital structuring (EQOS Asia business page, as of October 2026).
Investor readiness means a founder can answer an investor’s first questions with documents. This page offers a checklist that rates each answer as ready, partly ready, or open, and a go rule for the moment to contact investors. It supports the question of whether your company is ready to raise funds, and it works for a seed or a growth round. This page is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice.

What does investor readiness mean for a founder?
Investor readiness is the state in which a company can answer an investor’s first questions with documents. The questions are simple: how is the business doing, what will the money do, who runs it, who owns it, and why these investors. A founder who answers from files shortens the first meetings and builds trust.
Readiness is also a decision. Contacting investors when the answers are ready makes each first impression count, and waiting until they are ready costs time. A checklist with a go rule turns this trade-off into a visible line that the founders agree in advance, so the team acts on a shared signal.
Which items belong on an investor readiness checklist?
Six items cover the ground: metrics, data room, story and use of funds, team, cap table and legal, and investor list. Metrics ask for revenue, margins, cash, and growth for the last 12 months. The data room holds the documents behind them. The story and use of funds explain why now and what the money buys.
The team item shows who leads and who is missing. The cap table and legal item lists who owns what and which agreements are signed. The investor list names the investors who fit the stage, the cheque size, and the region. Each item has one owner, so the checklist has six names beside it.
How do you rate each item on an investor readiness checklist?
Each item receives one of 3 ratings. Ready means the document exists, is current, and has an owner. Partly ready means the document exists with a gap that has a date for closing. Open means the document is missing. Ready is worth 2 points, partly ready 1 point, and open 0, so the 6 items give a score out of 12.
Add one sentence of evidence beside each rating, such as the file name and the date. A reviewer outside the team can then check the rating in minutes. Rate the checklist once a month during preparation, and keep each version, so the team sees progress and can report it to advisers and board members.
How does the data room show investor readiness?
The data room is the most visible proof of readiness. A clear folder structure groups the company documents, the financial statements, the customer contracts, the team records, and the cap table. Each folder has an owner and a last-updated date. An investor who finds the answer in the first folder reads the rest with more confidence.
Test the room as an investor would. Ask someone outside the team to find 5 facts in 10 minutes: monthly revenue, cash balance, the largest customer, the founders’ shareholdings, and the main contract term. Facts that take longer to find indicate where the structure needs work, and the test costs very little.
Which story and use-of-funds answers does the checklist test?
The story item tests whether the company can explain why now. A good answer links a market change, a result the team has delivered, and the next milestone. The use-of-funds answer then assigns the raise to 3 or 4 lines, such as hiring, product, and market entry, with a milestone and a month for each.
Numbers connect the story to the checklist. The runway after the raise, the cost of each line, and the milestone that the money reaches should agree with the metrics in the data room. When the story and the numbers match, an investor sees one coherent company, and the first call focuses on strategy.
What does an illustrative investor readiness scoring look like?
Take an illustrative company with the 6 items rated as follows: metrics ready, data room partly ready, story and use of funds ready, team ready, cap table and legal open, and investor list partly ready. The score is 3 ready items × 2 + 2 partly ready items × 1 + 1 open item × 0, which equals 8 out of 12.
The go rule asks for 10 points and no open item, so the company waits. It closes the open cap table item first, which lifts it to partly ready and the score to 9. It then finishes the data room and the investor list, reaching 11. The founders agree on the date to start outreach. All figures are illustrative.
How does a decision engine turn the checklist into a fundraising decision?
The checklist rates documents. The EQOS Asia engine rates the company behind them on 9 dimensions, and a value under 0.618 falls in the STOP zone (EQOS Asia method page, as of October 2026). The business page describes fundraising as dilution viability, investor alignment, and runway across USD, SGD, and local currencies (EQOS Asia business page, as of October 2026).
The Strategic Diagnostic, US$4,586, is the typical tier for fundraising and capital structuring (EQOS Asia business page, as of October 2026). Start with the Λ simulator, or request a free 30-minute pre-diagnostic by video in Singapore time (SGT).

Frequently asked questions
What is an investor readiness checklist?
It is a list of 6 items that a company rates as ready, partly ready, or open before contacting investors: metrics, data room, story and use of funds, team, cap table and legal, and investor list. A go rule turns the ratings into a clear moment to start outreach. This page is general information, not legal, tax or investment advice.
How do I score an investor readiness checklist?
Give 2 points for ready, 1 point for partly ready, and 0 for open, which gives a score out of 12 for the 6 items. Set a go rule in advance, for example 10 points and no open item, and record the evidence for each rating with a file name and a date.
What should the data room contain first?
Start with the folders an investor opens first: company documents, financial statements, customer contracts, team records, and the cap table. Give each folder an owner and a last-updated date, and test the room by asking someone outside the team to find 5 facts in 10 minutes.
What does the EQOS Asia pre-diagnostic cover?
A free 30-minute video session in Singapore time (SGT) applies the EQOS Asia equation to your fundraising plan and shows which of the 9 dimensions carry the most risk (EQOS Asia pricing page, as of October 2026). The session helps you choose the right level of analysis.
