How long do crypto crashes last? Recovery times compared
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Crypto crashes lasted from 5 weeks (May 2021) to about 12 months (2018 and 2022) from peak to low.
- Bitcoin needed about 6 months to recover in 2021 and about 24 months after the 2018 low.
- After the 28 November 2022 low of $16,216, Bitcoin reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024.
- Mt. Gox creditor payments ran from 2014 to a deadline of 31 October 2024.
- A treasury can plan around a horizon of 24 months.
Crypto crashes lasted from 5 weeks to about 12 months from peak to low, and the recovery to a new high took from about 6 months to about 24 months. This page compares 4 falls with dated Bitcoin prices, as of October 2026, so you can choose a planning horizon from evidence. It is one chapter of the biggest crypto crashes, which ranks the falls themselves.

How long do crypto crashes last from peak to low?
The 4 falls give a wide range. In 2018 Bitcoin went from $19,783.06 on 17 December 2017 to a low near $3,100 in December 2018, about 12 months. In 2021 it went from $64,800 on 14 April to $30,000 on 19 May, about 5 weeks. In 2022 it went from $67,566.83 on 7 November 2021 to $16,216 on 28 November 2022, again about 12 months.
March 2020 sits at the short end: Bitcoin dropped 50% in early 2020 and reached $5,000 on 16 March within weeks. Four cases are too few for an average, so the page reports the range. The useful reading is that a crash can last 5 weeks or a full year, and a plan has to survive both.
Which endpoint marks the end of a crypto crash, the low or a new high?
No official rule marks the end of a crypto crash, so this page uses 2 endpoints. The first is the low, when the price stops falling, and it is known only afterwards. The second is a new high, when the price passes the earlier peak. The first endpoint measures the fall, and the second measures the full recovery for someone who bought at the top.
Each endpoint answers a different question. A trader who sold near the low cares about the first, and a holder who bought the peak cares about the second. Using both avoids a trap: a quick bounce from the low can look like the end while the price is still far under the old peak, as in the 2022 chapter, where the repair ran another 16 months.
How long did Bitcoin take to reach a new high after each crypto crash?
Recovery times differ from fall times. After the 2018 low in December, Bitcoin first closed above $20,000 again in December 2020, about 24 months later. After the May 2021 low it set $67,566.83 on 7 November 2021, about 6 months later. After the March 2020 low it passed its 2017 high within about 9 months.
After the 2022 low of $16,216 on 28 November, Bitcoin reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024, about 16 months later, as US bitcoin ETFs saw record inflows. It reached $100,000 on 5 December 2024. Measured from the 2021 peak instead, the full repair took about 28 months, a longer yardstick that fits investors who bought at the top.
Why do some crypto crashes last longer than others?
The cause sets the clock. A bubble that deflates, as in 2018, needs new buyers to rebuild, and those arrive slowly. A liquidity shock, as in March 2020, ends when the outside shock eases, and central bank action can speed that. A leverage flush, as in May 2021, ends once forced selling is finished.
A chain of company failures, as in 2022, lasts until trust returns, and trust follows a slower clock than price. This is why the same size of fall can have different recovery times. A reader who identifies the cause of a fall early gets a better estimate of how long to plan for.
Does a crypto crash end when the price recovers?
Two clocks run after a crash. The price clock stops when a new high appears. The repair clock covers court processes, creditor payments and new rules, and it runs longer. Mt. Gox stopped withdrawals on 7 February 2014, and its final payment deadline was extended to 31 October 2024, more than 10 years later.
Celsius paused withdrawals on 13 June 2022 and filed for Chapter 11 a month later, and legal outcomes for its former chief executive arrived in 2024 and 2025. Price can look healthy while old claims are still open. A holder who counts both clocks sets a more realistic horizon for exposure to any venue that failed.
How long did the October 2025 crypto liquidation last?
The October 2025 flush lasted about a day. About US$19 billion of leveraged positions were liquidated on 10 October, and Bitcoin reached a low of $104,782.88 across 10 and 11 October, more than 14% below its Friday high of $122,574.46. Few events in the record were faster.
FTI Consulting reports that open interest fell more than 40% from its October highs and that funding rates normalized. A fast flush can leave prices lower for much longer than it lasted. The comparison with 2018 is clear: one fall took a day, and the other took a year, yet both asked holders to wait.
What planning horizon fits the length of a crypto crash?
The range suggests a horizon of 24 months for any crypto position that matters to a treasury. That span covers the longest peak-to-low (about 12 months) and the longest low-to-high (about 24 months) in the record. A position that could not be held for that long should be sized smaller.
A simple test applies: if a 50% fall lasted 12 months, would operations continue? The EQOS Asia method page shows how this test becomes a score, and the Λ simulator lets you try your own figures. This page is general information, not investment advice, and a 30-minute pre-diagnostic can apply the test to your case.

Frequently asked questions
How long do crypto crashes usually last?
From peak to low, the 4 falls in this series lasted from about 5 weeks (May 2021) to about 12 months (2018 and 2022). Four cases are too few for an average, so the useful answer is a range, and a plan has to survive both ends of it.
How long did Bitcoin take to recover after the 2022 crash?
Bitcoin hit a low of $16,216 on 28 November 2022 and reached $73,664 on 13 March 2024, about 16 months later. It reached $100,000 on 5 December 2024. Measured from the 2021 peak of $67,566.83, the full repair took about 28 months.
Why does the recovery time differ between crypto crashes?
The cause sets the clock. A deflating bubble needs new buyers and recovers slowly, a liquidity shock ends when the outside shock eases, a leverage flush ends once forced selling is finished and a chain of failures lasts until trust returns.
What planning horizon should a treasury use for crypto?
The record points to 24 months, the span of the longest fall and the longest recovery. As of October 2026 that horizon is a planning tool, not a forecast. This page is general information, not investment advice.
